African Universities Decline on The QS 2020-2021 World Ranking.

    The QS World University Rankings, launched in 2004, has become the world’s most popular source of benchmarking data on university performance. The latter revealed an article published on Tuesday, June 8, 2021 stating that the performance of African universities ranked in the world university ranking 2020-2021 has decreased due to their low impact of research and reputation.

     The University of Cape Town in South Africa keeps its first place in the ranking at the continental level but on the other hand, it has lost six places compared to last year by ranking 226th globally. Followed by Witwatersrand which takes the second place at the continental level, and ranked 424th worldwide with a drop of 21 places in one year. Unlike the last two, the University of Johannesburg which is ranked third in Africa, and 434th overall. It is the only university to have gained up to five places. We also mention the American University of Cairo ranked 445th overall, losing 34 places while the University of Stellenbosch, ranking 482nd overall lost 26 places.

    Jack Moran explained this low level of performance. He the spokesperson and member of the QS Rankings Steering Committee identified the two main weaknesses: The impact of research publications and academic reputation. Despite these weaknesses, there are nine new entries from African Universities recorded in this ranking, of which the University of Sousse in Tunisia is the most remarkable with its 9th place at the continental level and positioning among the top 800 worldwide.
